Changes to operations due to COVID-19

By Mike Zecchino on March 18, 2020.

UPDATED 4/3: LabSmith’s headquarters are located in Livermore CA, which is currently under a shelter-in-place order through May 3. We approve of the county’s extraordinary effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and we are complying with all guidelines specified by the county and state.

We recognize that many of our customers rely on LabSmith products for essential research, testing and health care services. We have been building up our inventory in advance of a possible shutdown, so we will be able to continue to ship most products from our current stock, with minimal (2-3 day) delays. Our stock includes almost all of our uProcess and CapTite microfluidics products.

For LabSmith instruments (HVS high voltage sequencers, SVM video microscopes and LC timing controllers) please anticipate lead times 2-3 weeks longer than standard.

During the shelter-in-place period LabSmith employees will be working remotely. You can reach us by email at for routine questions, or you can contact me directly ( for urgent requests or to place critical orders. We will not have anyone staffing the phone lines, though we will be checking messages frequently.

If you need technical support, please email me directly and I will make sure your request is forwarded to the right person to assist you via email, Skype or phone.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this situation.

Visit LabSmith at SLAS 2020 San Diego

By Mike Zecchino on January 6, 2020.

From January 27–29, stop by Booth 1347 in San Diego to see the latest innovations in microfluidic flow and automation, voltage control, real-time video microscopy, and more.

LabSmith at SLAS 2020 Conference

At the show we will be displaying our comprehensive line of microfluidics flow and automation products. LabSmith’s uProcess automation software and hardware products provide straightforward, programmable routing of microfluidic volumes, while CapTite fittings and ferrules provide leak-free connectivity, easy cleaning and long life over multiple runs.

At SLAS we will also demonstrate the SVM340 Synchronized Video Microscope, with new Particle Counting Probes. These unique software probes let you characterize particles from sub-micron through hundreds of microns in diameter based on absorption, scattering, refraction or fluorescence. Count and characterize particles in real-time, up to 5000 particles/frame, and use the results to monitor and control your experiment as it happens. Applications include real-time sensing for microfluidic particle sorters and manipulators, step-and-scan culture characterization, powder particle size and shape quantitation, etc.

High-reliability valves are a key part of the uProcess family. The new AV801 compact selector valve includes 8 selector ports and one common port for complex fluid routing in 360µm or 1/16″ OD capillary systems. The AV801 features low valve volume and compatibility with a wide range of chemicals.

Also new is the uEP Electrophoresis Power Supply Module, an extremely compact, fully programmable high voltage supply for electrophoresis and gel electrophoresis setups. Measuring just 8.1 cm (3.2 in.) long and supplying voltages up to 300V, the uEP01 can be fully automated, with modes including constant voltage, constant current and constant power. Use the uEP in conjunction with our uProcess sensors for constant temperature or pressure modes.

LabSmith Announces Distribution Agreement with JFE Shoji Electronics

LIVERMORE, CA (November 18, 2014) – LabSmith, Inc., a leading microfluidics lab equipment manufacturer, has formalized an agreement with JFE Shoji Electronics to distribute LabSmith’s products into the microfluidics life sciences market in Japan. This partnership gives Japanese scientists working at the interface of microfluidics and the life sciences access to an expansive range of tools for lab-on-chip experiments engineering, chemistry,. JFE Shoji Electronics, a subsidiary of JFE Shoji Trade Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a distributor providing end-to-end solutions with tools to support customer’s flow chemistry and biology applications.

LabSmith, Inc., based in Livermore, California, expands the JFE Shoji Electronics product range, adding a wide range of tools for innovative laboratory electronic, visualization and microfluidic solutions. Seika Corporation, LabSmith’s first distribution partner in Japan, will continue to serve the Japanese market with the exclusive distribution of the LabSmith LC-series logic controllers.

JFE Shoji Electronics Corporation chief manager, Mr. Terunori Ogasawara, describes the Japanese market in microfluidics for life sciences as growing rapidly. “The government of Japan and local industry are investing heavily in life sciences R&D. Many working in the life sciences see an opportunity to develop new technology for biomedical research and diagnostics by leveraging the microfluidics platform. LabSmith products simplify these experiments. LabSmith tools have the sophistication to enable researchers to perform and automate cutting edge research. LabSmith components used for R&D and prototyping are also suitable for OEM applications in medical devices. We are offer products with such versatility to our customers.”

LabSmith president and CEO, Kirsten Pace agrees, stating “The Japanese investment in R&D across universities, government labs, and industry, creates an opportunity for the adoption and improvement of micro- and nano-technologies for life sciences applications. As life science research leaders move to lab-on-a-chip platforms that leverage the advantages of automation with small dimensional and volume scales, LabSmith tools can remove barriers to their success.”

By partnering, JFE Shoji Electronics and LabSmith can provide Japanese scientists with something more valuable than merely products – local service and support. “JFE Shoji Electronics has both a local presence and a commitment to customer service including product demonstrations, installation and support. I am impressed with both the product knowledge and the application support that JFE Shoji Electronics can offer our customers in Japan, “states Yolanda Fintschenko, Ph.D., Director of Sales, Marketing and New Technologies at LabSmith.
